Comparing Jack and Hitler

The novel, Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, is a book about a group of kids who get stranded in an island. Jack is a dictator, same as Adolf Hitler. A dictator is a person exercising absolute power especially a ruler who has absolute unrestricted control in a government without hereditary succession. Hitler and Jack used violence to keep their power and limited free special.

Both Jack and Hitler stole power. Both were selfish. Golding writes, “He was a chief now in truth, and he made stabbing motions with his spear from his left hand dangled piggy’s broken glasses.” (3). Jack stole Piggy’s glasses to have something to fire up food. On the JewishVirtualLibrary site, it states, “Hitler’s first target was Germany’s closets neighbor to the east, Poland. And agricultural country with little military power. Hitler attacked Poland from three directions on September 1, 1939 and in just over one month Poland surrendered.” (4)  Hitler is also a selfish, he took over Poland, Gechaslovaka, Austria and much more. The reasons why he took countries was because he wanted more power, more land and more resources. Jack and Hitler are both alike. They both took over things that did not belong to them just to gain power.

Jack and Hitler are both murders. They kill to keep their power, Jack encourages the boys to kill Simon in a tribal frenzy. Golding writes, “Simon’s dead body moved out toward the open sea.”(3) Jack encouraged his death. “ At 4:45 a.m., some 1.5 million German troops invade Poland all along its 1,750-mile border with German-controlled territory. Simultaneously, the German Luftwaffe bombed Polish airfields, and German warships and U-boats attacked Polish naval forces in the Baltic Sea.” (4) Hitler also murdered people from Poland. In camps and ghettos.  Hitler murdered people for more power. Jack and Hitler are murders. They murdered people to gain more power and used fear to control their followers.

Jack and Hitler limited free speech, Jack and Hitler represents evil and violence, they were the dark side of a human nature. Jack no longer respected the conch, he says, “The conch doesn’t count on top of the mountain.” (3)  This quote represents that Jack has potentially lost respect for the conch because savagery has won. He said he’s going to become leader no matter what. He is not going to listen to others. In fact, he wants the others to listen to him and follow what he says. They can only speak where they are told to. Hitler stated, “Tyranny cannot defeat the power of ideas.” (1) Nothing can stop Hitler from ruling people, he had all the power he needed and was willing to gain more. Free Speech and Free Press states, “It was under the Nazi regime, with Hitler in control of all Germany, that freedom of the press was liberty that was completely removed.” (2). Hitler limited free speech, he burned books so the people wouldn’t get any smarter or get educated. And questioned him on why he did things. No one was allowed to have free speech in Jack or Hitler’s worlds.

Jack and Hitler are dictators, they ruled people the way they wanted. They both stole power and limited free speech. They used fear to control their followers. They both represent evil and violence. They are the dark side of human nature.
